VPN Protocols

Protocol Information

PPTP vs L2TP vs OpenVPN

VPN Zoom offers three different standard protocols that can be used to access our secure servers. Each protocol offers unique capabilities and strengths that should be considered when configuring your device. We recommend using OpenVPN as it offers increase speeds and protection. If you device isn’t compatible with OpenVPN we suggest L2TP as it offers an increase in security over PPTP. If you need help determining which protocol is best for you please contact our support staff.

Highest encryption. Checks data integrity and encapsulates the data twice.
  • Speed
Requires more CPU processing to encapsulate data twice.
  • Stability
    Stable on NAT-supported devices.
  • Compatibility
Native in most desktop, mobile device and tablet operating systems.
  • Conclusion
L2TP/IPsec is a good choice if OpenVPN isn’t supported by your device and security is top priority.

256-bit Encryption

OpenVPN

  • Encryption
    256-bit
  • Security
Highest encryption. Authenticates data with digital certificates.
  • Speed
Best performing protocol. Fast speeds, even on connections with high latency and across great distances.
  • Stability
Most reliable and stable, even behind wireless routers, on non-reliable networks, and on Wi-Fi hotspots.
